Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Bob Jones Jr. was the son of the University founder. He served as acting president in his father’s absence, 1933-1947, as president 1947-1971, and as chancellor thereafter until his death. A graduate of BJC (1931) and the University of Pittsburgh (1933), Jones received many honorary doctorates, the first in 1934, when he was 23. An accomplished preacher and Shakespearean actor, he also served as the editor of the periodical Faith for the Family (1973-1986) that he had founded, wrote poetry and hymns in traditional forms, and was a self-taught and well-advised collector of Old Master paintings. The BJU Seminary was named in his honor.
