A native of Illinois, Gary Weier graduated from BJU in 1988 with a degree in Interpretative Speech and from Purdue University in 1997 with a PhD in rhetoric. A member of the communication faculty, 1995-2025, Weier also held a number of administrative posts, including Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, 2011-2015, and Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, 2015-2025. Weier successfully led BJU through the TRACS and SACSCOC accreditation processes during the first two decades of the 21st century. Following Steve Pettit’s resignation as president in 2023, Acting CEO Alan Benson formed an executive leadership team with Weier and Bruce McAllister, to guide the university through the interim period.
