A native of Alabama, Estelle Siddons was well educated for a woman of her generation, fluent in French, and an inveterate reader. She sporadically made her home with the Joneses. Bob Jones Sr. called her “Mother” and treated her with the utmost respect and deference. On her part, she collected material from her extensive reading that she thought Jones might be able to use in his sermons, and as a relatively wealthy woman, she made timely contributions to the college. As a child, Bob Jones Jr. was left in her care, and she taught him French and a love of literature. He later said, “She was the one person who, to my thinking, could do no wrong.” A women’s residence hall on the Greenville campus was named in her memory.
